e107 was started by jalist in 2004. Since then it has taken on a life of its own and attracted a large community of users. It has a lot of helpful features for making a community type of site.

[ CMS Reviews ] Symphony

Symphony is a community-driven CMS that uses XML/XSLT as its templating language. It’s a relatively newcomer on the CMS scene, so it doesn’t have a huge following yet, but it carries a lot of potential under its belt.

[ CMS Reviews ] Textpattern

Textpattern is a flexible, elegant, and easy to use CMS. It is article-based, much like a blog. With it you can publish articles, links, images, and files. Textpattern opts for Textile instead of a WYSIWYG editor. Textile is a simple syntax for creating XHTML.

[ CMS Reviews ] concrete5

Concrete CMS started as a commercial offering in 2003, it has been through several revisions and updates, and version 5 brought it to open source. It’s a flexible system that has a nice backend, yet uses edit-in-place functionality.

[ CMS Reviews ] Contao (TYPOlight)

Contao is an older CMS with a new name. Formerly TYPOlight, they changed the name to avoid confusion with TYPO3. Contao isn’t light either, its a fully featured CMS that many enjoy using.

[ CMS Reviews ] WordPress

Wordpress is technically a blogging system, but it has grown into a formidable CMS by adding good page management features, media uploading and management, as well as numerous other features that help it to manage content.

[ CMS Reviews ] Wolf CMS

Wolf is a simple no-fluff content management system that helps to manage pages, templates, users and files. The CMS takes its lineage from Frog CMS, and before that Radiant CMS.

[ CMS Reviews ] ExpressionEngine

This CMS is the commercial offering brought to you by EllisLab, the same guys who created the PHP development framework named CodeIgniter. ExpressionEngine is a flexible system that allows you to publish any number of different streams of information with custom fields. It comes in three versions: “freelancer” version, non-commercial, and commercial.

[ CMS Reviews ] CMS Made Simple

CMS Made Simple is based on the Smarty template engine and builds on that foundation to create a solid offering that could be compared to the big names like Joomla and ModX.

[ CMS Reviews ] Website Baker

Website baker could be compared to a Joomla-style CMS, but is much less overwhelming. It has the right amount of functionality to make a solid website that will make clients quick to understand it, and happy to use it.

[ CMS Reviews ] TYPO3

TYPO3 is a enterprise-class solution that can handle large and complex websites. It offers the full gambit of advanced features like multilingual sites, and working with almost any database out there. It also has a broad base of extensions and developers that can add to its functionality.

[ CMS Reviews ] Drupal

Drupal is one of the biggest and most well known Content Management Systems. It is usually used to run community web portal types of websites, but because it has many features and modules, it can be made to run almost any kind of website.

[ CMS Reviews ] MODx

MODx is “100% buzzword compliant” meaning that it was created to immediately work with all sorts of techie things like AJAX, Javascript libraries and all that sorts of goodness. It’s creators call it a “Content Management Framework” meaning that it can be used for a whole lot more than your typical static brochure site.

[ CMS Reviews ] Joomla

Joomla is a large contender in the open source CMS market. It has won several awards, and many big websites use it for their management. It manages all different types of content well like simple text, photos, music, videos, or documents.

[ CMS Reviews ] Kentico CMS

Kentico CMS is a commercial ASP.NET content management system. It has a page-based structure where you can add content parts, of which they have a variety to choose from. It has a free edition that can be used, and several versions of their paid versions.

[ CMS Reviews ] Plone

Plone is a CMS that uses the Zope application server, which uses the Python programming language. This is unique in a world filled with PHP applications. It is made to be used as an intranet, portal, web site or community site. It helps manage all sorts of content, organized into folders, that can be uploaded by a community of users.

[ CMS Reviews ] SilverStripe

Silverstripe was put together by a New Zealand based company that strongly believes in open source applications. SilverStripe is named “Most Promising Open Source Content Management System” in Packt Publishing’s 2008 CMS Awards. The CMS works well because it looks and acts a little bit more like a desktop application than a traditional web-based CMS.

[ CMS Reviews ] Sitefinity

Sitefinity is an ASP.NET Commercial CMS offering from Telerik Corp. It has nice drag-and-drop, edit-in-place functionality that practically anyone could figure out. The product comes in two flavors: a community (free) version with some limitations, and a commercial edition that starts at $499.

[ CMS Reviews ] Squarespace

Squarespace is a relatively new commercially hosted CMS that takes a non-technical approach to creating and editing sites. With plans starting at $8 a month, it is reasonably priced and doesn’t put any artificial page limitations on your site.

[ CMS Reviews ] Movable Type

Movable Type is a commercial offering, turned open source from Six Apart. It is billed as both a blogging system as well as a simple content management system. It can manage multiple websites/blogs with one install. There is a free blogging version, and then business and enterprise versions that cost much more.

[ CMS Reviews ] LightCMS

A commercial CMS from Element Fusion. While they have several similar CMS’s for different groups, (churches, businesses…) LightCMS is the one for designers. There is a free option, but it is limited to 3 pages, otherwise the system requires a monthly subscription, similar to a web host.

[ CMS Reviews ] CushyCMS

This is a little side project by Stateless Systems. CushyCMS is the easiest CMS you will ever implement. Essentially, it is a hosted service that allows users to change content via a web-interface, and then have it uploaded back to the server.

Zenphoto is a community-developed application made to be a simple photo gallery without getting too feature bloated. “Simpler is better” is their credo. However, it is flexible enough to work for almost anyone’s gallery site.

[ News ] Website Launched!

Our website has officially launched tonight, on Monday March 16th. We’re trying to encourage users of different CMS systems to review their favorite CMS’s in order to help other visitors who are looking for opinions. Please consider adding your viewpoint for your CMS of choice, as well as add your designs to the Gallery.

[ CMS Reviews ] Jaws

Jaws is a small CMS project that focuses on beginner users who want to make a customized personal website. The administration menu allows you to add “Gadgets” that include new functionality (such as a Blog, Photo Organizer, or Poll).

[ CMS Reviews ] PmWiki

PmWiki is a nice, simple wiki that is easy to use and collaborate with for projects and community driven documentation. Part of their philosophy is to favor writers over readers and trying to avoid adding gratuitous features.

[ CMS Reviews ] Vanilla

Vanilla is a nice breath of fresh air for everyone who has searching through a hundred forums looking for what they need. Like a lot of popular CMS’s, they take the approach that it has the essential functionality upon install, and that can be extended with add-ons. It features a rich user experience along with slick administration capabilities.

[ News ] Movable Type 4.23 released

4.23 is a mandatory release for security reasons. While the security vulnerability hasn’t been exploited yet, it is important that you upgrade. It shouldn’t affect plugins at all, but it may affect some themes for customers who use the community template sets and user profile feature.

[ News ] Open Source and Usability

The website Playing With Wire has written an article comparing the WordPress and Joomla content management systems. It has come under fire with the Joomla community and the Slashdot community, but in the end it has brought up some great discussion revolving around usability and CMS’s.

[ News ] CMS Made Simple releases version 1.5.3

After a long wait, version 1.5.3 has been released. Unfortunately, it doesn’t have a lot of new features, but it does fix a lot of minor issues that people have been having. The package should be reaching a rock solid state that shouldn’t require many more minor updates in the 1.5.x series.

[ News ] The White House Embraces Drupal

Interestingly, a new government-run website, Recovery.org was built on the open-source content management system Drupal. An article at TechPresident.com talks about why this is an important move that may show new openness to open source technologies used by the U.S. government.

[ News ] Radiant 0.7.0 “Intaglio”

The Radiant team has just announced the availability of Radiant 0.7.0 dubbed “Intaglio”. This release has been a long time in coming, and changes a lot of stuff under the hood, but doesn’t bring many new features.  A new database template is included, Rails 2.1.2 is included, and Radiant is now compatible with Ruby 1.8.7.
