Our Impressions:

TYPO3 is a modular system that can solve a variety of website needs. It’s really nice the way you are able to create pages with a variety of kinds of  “content elements” like regular text, forms, filelinks, multimedia, etc. and then tell it where to go on your site. The system is highly configurable and could work for a variety of applications, especially bigger, more complex websites.

Even its fans admit that it has a steep learning curve when it comes to working with it. The system seems a little dated and could use some new attention. It doesn’t seem to be in very active development these days, considering the last update was released in March 2007.

Strengths: A very active project with a large worldwide user community. An enterprise class CMS with workflow and version control. The are many extensions and although some are old the stable newest releases are usually a good basis for further development or work with minimal configuration. Easy interface for end users in the backend and very fine ability to control access and functions for different users and groups. compatible with Active Directory, LDAP and other user login systems. The extension development framework, once mastered, makes the system extremely versatile.

Weaknesses: A steep developers learning curve. Some extensions in the repository are old and out of date BUT usually these can be sorted out by date of release or typo3 version.

Strengths: Great number of extensions (many alternatives for the same thing), powerfull, typoscript allow to gain flexibility whitout devlopping custom php plug-in.

Weaknesses: It takes a lots of time to learn typoscript, the documentation is undetailled and need more exemples, the CMS is getting old … lots of extension not updated since 2005 using table for design purpose, etc…

Conclusion : It’s like an old complex tank, you don’t go hunt with it but could be usefull depend on your need.
