SilverStripe

Silverstripe was put together by a New Zealand based company that strongly believes in open source applications. SilverStripe is named “Most Promising Open Source Content Management System” in Packt Publishing’s 2008 CMS Awards. The CMS works well because it looks and acts a little bit more like a desktop application than a traditional web-based CMS.

Our Impressions:

It handles pages, images, and forms easily. It also adds nice features like the ability to send out newsletters, view statistics, and manage comments from within the application. This ties everything together nicely. Their Sapphire framework looks like it would be easy to create themes and extend your website with their helpful documentation.

The interface might be a little intimidating to those people who don’t have any technical knowledge. It has a lot of options that can be chosen that the viewer might not know what to do with right away.

Strengths: Straightforward installation using common server setups
Quick to install
The getting started tutorial on customising a theme is helpful, as is the guide to more advanced customisation e.g. news list.
Very flexible in terms of coding smart custom templates e.g. a latest news and events page as well as simple sites.

Weaknesses: Documentation is lacking, though viewing the SS forum tends to answer the majority of questions.
Some of the extended modules look to be out of date, not maintained.

Strengths: -> Quick install and ready for simple tasks quickly

Weaknesses: -> Poor documentation
-> Many “stable” aspects (features, modules, etc.) are very unstable
-> Extending is more like hacking the CMS. Silverstripe = Sapphire + CMS where the CMS is a massive blackbox of over 2000+ JS files associated with it.
